Running on two hours of sleep, a 9am flight to Asia the next day, and a baby on board, Rebecca Minkoff still sounds like a breath of fresh air during her Snapette interview. She has the kind of voice you’d hear from someone who just had a day at the spa. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. She just wrapped up a successful 2012 runway show at Lincoln Center where she casted models, performed fittings, managed the run of show (which is matching each model to numerous outfits), and arranged all seating (“so political, it is worse than giving a wedding”). All this while she is prepping for expansion in Asia and giving TLC to the little man in her life, her one year old son. Rebecca Minkoff is the powerhouse behind the brand that has effortlessly identified itself with girls who are “the downtown romantic.”
Check out Rebecca Minkoff’s trend alerts for spring, her plans to expand the RM corp., and how she believes Snapette impacts fashion!
Snapette: What trends have you seen for this year? How have you embraced the trends you’ve seen and made them unique to your brand?
RM: A lot of girls are combining prints and are doing interesting color combinations that a year or two ago might have been scary. We’ve put that trend into the bags via color combos and a lot of mixed prints.
Snapette: What is your future outlook and where do you see most opportunity?
RM: We are really growing our shoe and apparel and want to grow it as big as the handbags. We want to be a full lifestyle brand; the goal would be a full offering.
Snapette: Does that include home goods?
RM: Definitely
Snapette: How do you see mobile and social media impacting fashion?
RM: I think it affects fashion because now more than ever you can be in direct contact with your customer. You can know what she is doing; know what she likes and what she doesn’t like. It’s an opportunity that gets so much information and really focuses more on strengthening your relationship with your consumer.
Snapette: Why do you use the Snapette app?
RM:  I think [Snapette] is exciting because the most positive opinion on what movie to see or what book to read is from your friends. And the fact that you can do it through shopping is a really great idea. I always ask my friends what they like so I don’t know why other people wouldn’t want to do the same while they’re out shopping.
Snapette: How do you see Snapette helping your brand and business?
RM: I think the more people that are referring consumers to stores that are selling our products will only grow our business and make the stores feel validated for choosing and taking us in the first place.

Anne Bowen, popular among such Hollywood elite as Jessica Alba, Angelina Jolie, Beyonce, and Kate Bosworth, appropriately chose the CPW Gallery along Central Park for her Fall/Winter 2012 Runway Show. Her luxury collection continues to be a means for women to express their confidence and individuality. We’re sure to spot many of these elegant pieces adorned with sparkles, sequins and sheer fabric on the red carpet. The Anne Bowen F/W 2012 Collection was a staple in Snapette’s Fashion Week agenda.

When viewing Michelle Smith’s Fall 2012 Milly collection, one thing was very present -her use of color! Hues of clover, heliotrope, shocking pink (in the words of Michelle herself), and chartreuse all worked together to create a bold and exciting contrast to her core palette of black and white. They were partnered with super-structured materials, such as tweeds, leather, and bonded wool. Milly made it very clear that her women are sophisticated and futuristic, yet still like to have fun through her clothing and patterns—and we couldn’t have agreed more!

If Austin Powers, The Mad Hatter, and Willy Wonka planned a party it would be the Alice + Olivia Fall 2012 presentation. Models were positioned in front of colorful backdrops and a long dinning table piled with long brass candles and chalices. And what would the event be without an ice cream cart right next to the bar! Spotted amongst the beautiful chaos was Kristin Chenoweth, Johnny Weir, Erin Andrews and Tinsley Mortimer. But the spotlight could not be taken off of designer Stacey Bendet whose collection compelled guests to view every platform multiple times and then some. Attendees balanced their drinks and ice cream sandwiches while snapping away at poofy skirts, sequin dresses, fur jackets, and lace for miles on end.  Alice + Olivia had their guests leaving with smiles from ear to ear, notes for their fall closet, and of course goodie bags.
SNAPETTE FAV: White skirt with sequins top and jacket combo was a little slice of heaven!

Who knew that Kara Ross graduated from the Gemological Institute of America prior to launching her first line of precious jewelry some 20 years ago! Her passion, which originated from a trip she took with her parents to Africa, now lies in rare foreign stones and exotic animal skins. The showcase was composed of three displays: the Kara by Kara Ross collection comprised of bold “statement pieces” inspired by Ross’s recent trip to Morocco, the gemstone collection, and the handbag collection. The handbag collection is Ross’s newest endeavor. Most are made of exotic animal skins and leather that give each clutch, satchel, and shoulder bag a unique texture.
Snapette has learned exclusively that Kara Ross is planning to launch a new platform of customizable handbags that will allow customers to choose the skin, gem, and design of their choice! Although this will take about 9 months to become available to the market, we’re eager to see what Kara Ross has in store for us in the near future! With this designer already establishing a name abroad in Europe and Asia, there’s no doubt that Kara Ross will soon become a household name worldwide!

The Doo.ri Fall 2012 fashion show took place on the cobble streets of the art district in a minimalist space packed with editors, bloggers (ManRepeller & Bryan Boy) and TV personalities (Brad Goreski of “It’s a Brad Brad World”).  Talks of trips to Cape Town and St. John after fashion week halt to a stop once the lights turn up and the music begins. A wave of slow motion fabric in gray, burgundy, lime, navy and winter ivory filter down the runway.   The once jaded faces down the aisles now stare with intensity.  After 25 minutes of streaming beauty the show ends but the pieces remain etched in the audiences’ mind.  Doo.ri’s fall 2012 collection displays how far she’s come since her 2007 launch, but her roots clearly remain in the draping of the fabric. Snapette really enjoyed the show and we have no doubt that her Macy’s collection will be just as fantastic!

The Snapette team was lucky to attend the Guess and Guess by Marciano Summer 2012 Press Preview at Helen Mills Studio on Wednesday night. And what a classy affair it was! For the coming season, Marciano drew inspiration from vintage styles that pay homage to eras past, which seems especially apropos given the brand’s recent thirty-year anniversary. Denim bustier tops, sheer white blouses, and floral print Capri jeans were just a few highlights.Models were clad from head to toe in playful patterns and bright colors that really popped. Some of the most attention-worthy looks were the subtle yet elegant silk dresses on display in the entrance hall, complemented perfectly with matching shoes and clutches. All of the featured styles embodied the sexy essence that has defined Guess throughout the years. The collection has a summer beach feel to it, with an air of sophistication that we can always expect from Guess. Especially given Wednesday’s beautiful spring-like weather, it truly did feel like warmer times.
And finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that the summer line preview featured a guest appearance by model and actress Amber Heard! As of last March, Heard was named the new face of the Guess campaign. She wore the “Cio” boucle dress by Guess by Marciano and looked absolutely fabulous in it.
We had a blast mingling with friends and colleagues both old and new—and, of course, we were sure to snap photos for all of our fashion-hungry fans and readers out there! Click here to view more photos from the event.
